Daniel and I took a 10 day trip to Mongolia early this month. We took a 30 hour train ride from Beijing to Ulaan Baatar (the capitol of Mongolia) which was pleasant and amusing. The gauge of the train tracks is 1435mm in China and 1520mm in Mongolia and Russia so the train cars must be hydraulically lifted so that the wheels can be adjusted to make the switch. I'm not sure if the whole wheel sets must be changed or merely adjusted--they seemed to be adjusted as we watched the train cars lined up next to us.
